Watchtower shuts down Quotes website

December 25th, 2005 Leave a comment Go to comments

After heavy pressure from the Watchtower Society Peter Mosier’s site quotes.watchtower.ca has been shut down in compliance with the terms of a Settlement Agreement.

Peter Mosier: “The domain “Watchtower.ca” has been transferred to WTS (I assume they will have it pointing to Borg.org watchtower.org ASAP). My copies of the site have been destroyed, the files deleted, and my WT Library CD has been destroyed, in accordance with the Settlement Agreement which will afford a “discontinuance” of their suit against me”.

WTS vs Quotes: Requiem for a Research Web Site

In compliance with the terms of a Settlement Agreement, my information and research web site, http://quotes.watchtower.ca, is now “dark”. The domain “Watchtower.ca” has been transferred to WTS (I assume they will have it pointing to Borg.org watchtower.org ASAP). My copies of the site have been destroyed, the files deleted, and my WT Library CD has been destroyed, in accordance with the Settlement Agreement which will afford a “discontinuance” of their suit against me. (Interesting aside: a discontinuance means the suit is merely in “suspended animation”. It will always be there, waiting to thaw out, to haunt me for the rest of my life. It will become part of my estate after I’m gone. That’s just the way it works.)

The complete scan of the settlement (PDF) is available by clicking here.

It has been said that settlement negotiations are two people working toward a mutually disagreeable conclusion. Unfortunately, due to the restrictions of Paragraph 12 of the settlement, I am unable to comment on the negotiations of the settlement. However, by that same paragraph, I am able to comment on the terms of the settlement; hence I provide the details by providing the complete settlement agreement. I have nothing to hide.

Now I can put this behind me, but I am free to talk about it publicly. Of course, that will be challenging, since I agreed, as part of the settlement, to destroy all my copies of the site and also destroy my WT LIBRARY CD. But at least I will be able to tell my story. In fact, I may even write a book, or perhaps (when I dare to dream) a screenplay. I am thinking of a farcical yet fact-based comedy, with Jim Carey playing the lead. Can you imagine the high-jinx?  ALLRIGHTYTHEN!

I extend my sincere and deep THANKS to everyone that offered moral support and offers of financial help.

Frequently Ask Questions

Q: Surely people here at JWD would help with legal expenses. Why did you give up so easily? I offered you money and you didn’t accept it!

A: I was truly thankful to the many people that offered money (and for the record, I did not accept any money from anyone). However, let me explain the magnitude of the finances involved so you can see how futile this was. Intellectual Property disputes are a specialty under the law. This is another way of saying IP lawyers charge a LOT of money. $500 per hour is the STARTING number, at the bottom of the scale. If my case went to trial, I could easily be up to $50,000 to $100,000 before ever getting in front of a judge, just with all the pre-trial motions, discovery, mandated mediation, legal research, etc. Once finally in court, costs can be $10,000 PER DAY.

If I added up all the wonderful offers of assistance, I would have, perhaps, $2,000 to $3,000. That may be enough for a simple, uncontested divorce or something, but is not nearly enough to cover my costs in this case. Also, I know that many of you, like the parable of the widow with the two coins that gave all she had, (insert groan here) were offering me money you really couldn’t afford to be without. I could not in good conscience accept money from people that are themselves struggling to make ends meet.

I would ask that you instead direct your money to a much more worthy cause: Shunned Father in Calgary is suing WTS. His case is very  promising. I don’t know if he has completed setting up his Defence Fund, but I know that is where I am going to put my money.

Q: But if/when you win the case, you would be able to get your legal costs back by filing a claim for costs!

A: True, but I would still have to come up with the money up front. Do you have $100,000? I don’t. I suppose I could have 2nd mortgaged my home, or even sold it; sold my car, etc. But frankly, it likely still wouldn’t have been enough. And I fully expect that WTS would have used every trick in the book to drag things out as long as possible, knowing that my funds would run out long, long before theirs. It has taken 3.5 months just to reach a “quick, give it all away” settlement. How long would it have taken if I fought them? How much would it have cost?

Q: But their case is completely without merit! Their arguments in the Statement of Claim are not even internally consistent! You didn’t break any copyright laws! How can you let them get away with this B.S.??

A:

“We are not talking about ‘right’ and ‘wrong’, Arthur. We are talking about The Law” — the lawyer on the TV show WKRP in Cincinnati

I must say, I was very naive. I felt, and still feel, that my Watch Tower Quotes web site was fully in compliance with copyright law, and therefore I felt I was safe and would be held harmless. But I was naive to think that just because I was not breaking any laws, WTS would be unable to do anything. Obviously, I overestimated their decency; or perhaps, underestimated their ability to “frame mischief by law”. I felt that only radical groups like Scientology would stoop to the strong-arm tactics of a law suit. Obviously, I was wrong.

They have access to millions of dollars of cash and assets, and also have the convenience of in-house legal counsel (clothed, housed, and paid for through tax-exempt donations). IMO, WTS is 80% printing/publisher, and 20% law firm. Keep in mind, you don’t have to be a very good lawyer to harass someone by launching a suit. BTW, WTS retained a TOP Intellectual Property law firm. I think, amazingly, they actually sincerely expected to litigate this. Obviously they overestimated how deep “Satan’s” pockets are! I wonder if any of the tax-exempt “Katrina Relief” or “Asian Tsunami Relief” money ended up paying for lawyers, thanks to it being labelled only for the “Worldwide Work”? (I’m just speculating here.)

Q: “Quotes, I am a multi-millionaire, and I want to fund your fight.”

A: Where were you 3 months ago? And do you need a resident nerd to fix your computer?

OK, seriously now. Even if this offer were made, I would still be reluctant to continue to fight WTS. Just these past 3.5 months have taken a tremendous emotional toll on both me, and (more importantly) my lovely, supportive wife. She was never a JW, and doesn’t deserve to get abused by WTS persecution.

Also, this arrived when I was at a time in my life when I thought the WTS toll was entirely behind me. I was done with being an ex-JW, and was slowly becoming a regular person. I rarely updated my site, (having realized that cataloging interesting and significant WTS quotes is an ENDLESS job) and rarely posted here at JWD. Then, on Sept 8, I got punched in the stomach, when I was served.

“I tried to get out, but they kept pulling me back in!”

You have to pick your battles. And this isn’t a battle I want to fight. If you have access to large amounts of money, and want to make WTS look foolish to the world by having them silence their own words, well, be my guest. More power to you. But realize you are playing in their domain, by their rules.

Q: I downloaded a copy of your site using one of the two methods you had posted. I now want to put it on my own web space. Will that hurt you? Should I do this?

A: I will not offer an opinion on this. I have destroyed all copies of my site “known to and controlled by” me. If you have a site, I don’t want to know about it, and furthermore, I obviously have no control over it.

Q: But your site was such a valuable resource! It was unique in that it used primary documents, and refrained from editorializing. It was widely linked to as support for many other JW/WTS Education and Research web sites. What about that? What about the children! Did you ever stop to think about the children?

A: I am truly sorry that I have been forced to remove this resource due to Watch Tower’s persecution. But the world turned before my site came along, and I’m certain that it will continue to rotate now that “Quotes” is dark.

I have long felt that the most damaging, most effective tool against Watch Tower (or any other High Control Group) is to carefully and rationally study the group’s words and works. WTS thrives on information control, including controlling access to their own information — not too much, not too soon. Clearly my site struck a nerve with the old men that control WTS. Their Statement of Claim plainly stated that they feel that a collection of their own words can only have one purpose: to embarrass them. (BTW, I’ve never figured how they felt that, even if such a ridiculous claim were true, how it is relevant to a case of alleged copyright infringement! I didn’t see any “embarrassment” clauses in the Copyright laws.)

Perhaps one day another young Jedi Paduan, or old Jedi Master, will pick up the torch. The funny thing about squishing Cockroaches is they seem to be able to reproduce faster than you can squish them. You don’t have to worry about the one you just squished, you have to worry about the 10,000 offspring hatching under the cupboard.

Finally, since I am certain that my posts here are monitored to ensure my ongoing compliance with the terms of the Settlement Agreement, I would like to offer the following lyrics, in a gesture of, frankly, legitimate Copyright Violation. You know, if you’re going to do the time, you might as well do the crime.

Of course I’ve heard this song many times before, but when I heard it a couple of days ago, I immediately thought of the following people, and it is to these people I

would like to dedicate this little ditty:

  • Ken Little (President of WTS Canada, and signatory to the Settlement Agreement)
  • Glen How, O.C., Q.C., L.S.M., (and personal friend of my mother since her first days in Canada)
  • John Burns, LL.B.
  • David Gnam, CGA, LL.B. (and as the CGA, likely the only person who REALLY knows how much money they have, at least in Canada)
  • Shane H. Brady, LL.B. (and CBBE: Cinnamon Bun Baker Extraordinaire!)
  • …and all the other (Ken) Little people, the cleaners, the drywallers, the plumbers, the floor refinishers, order desk clerks, and the rest of the Nowhere Men who become pseudo-important — albeit dysfunctional — elders within the confines of The Watch Tower Society… men that fight to protect their little fiefdom with all the sincerity of a September 11th Terrorist.
He’s a real nowhere man,

Sitting in his nowhere land,

Making all his nowhere plans

for nobody.

Doesn’t have a point of view,

Knows not where he’s going to,

Isn’t he a bit like you and me?

Nowhere man, please listen,

You don’t know what you’re missing,

Nowhere man, the world is at your command.

He’s as blind as he can be,

Just sees what he wants to see,

Nowhere man can you see me at all?

Nowhere man, don’t worry,

Take your time, don’t hurry,

Leave it all ’till somebody else

Lends you a hand.

Doesn’t have a point of view,

Knows not where he’s going to,

Isn’t he a bit like you and me?

Nowhere man, please listen,

You don’t know what you’re missing,

Nowhere man, the world is at your command.

He’s a real nowhere man,

Sitting in his nowhere land,

Making all his nowhere plans

For nobody.

Making all his nowhere plans

for nobody.

Making all his nowhere plans

For nobody.

“Apostate” info comes from nowhere else other than the past Watchtowers and literature.

Why do you think they want you off the internet?

Because its past teachings are shown to be false, contradictory and ignorant.

Many bound volumes of Watchtowers have been edited from when they where originally published…

    From Awake! 1969 May 22 p.15:
“If you are a young person, you also need to face the fact that you will never grow old in this present system of things. Why not? Because all the evidence in fulfillment of Bible prophecy indicates that this corrupt system is due to end in a few years. Therefore, as a young person, you will never fulfill any career that this system offers. If you are in highschool and thinking about a college education, it means at least four, perhaps even six or eight more years to graduate into a specialized career. But where will this system of things be by that time? It will be well on the way toward its finish, if not actually gone!”

Just thought I would log on and find out if anything new was being discussed. It does not look like I missed much over the passed months. Either He is Or He is not. We will find out in the end or we won’t if we don’t wake up after death. We choose one or the other and the consequences that come with that choice.

    @henri
    Hows this for blasphemy?
Your living God of the Old Testament is egotistical, a lover of burning flesh, a child murderer, condones raping of virgins, thinks slavery is just peachy clean and to top it all knows nothing of the Universe he allegedly created.
Just when you think a God could not be any worse we get the living God of the New Testament this fine fellow introduces us to Hell where we will spend the rest of time in agony, and all because we do not have the misguided and ignorant thought patterns you do.
It all in your good book why don’t you read the blady thing and get a whimpering of a life?
    Cheers,
    Markus

    hi markus it’s no name,

you have a pretty good argument there, here is what I know. JW and true Christianity are two Different religions, just compare the main verses that support Jehovah Witness major beliefs in the NWT and the New International Version (NIV). The Bible wasn’t written 6000 years ago some authors lived in A.D. and
God has just the same amount of wrath as he did, he had the same amount of grace then as he does now. the only difference is his son Jesus Christ, whom died on the cross for any one who chooses to believe that he is LORD and Savior. When you do choose this his blood that was shed covers you, you are considered perfect in his eyes, and you always will be once you choose to believe that he did die for you, he is LORD and Savior, and believe that God raised him from the dead. this is something JW’s won’t tell you because they don’t believe it. 1John 4:7-12,16, 18-21 (NIV)

The last comment I left was ok but I remembered something else. emptiness is not wether or not it is true but rather do you feel as if there is more to this life than what you know? think about it, do you feel that way? you don’t have to give me an answer

    November 9th, 2007 at 03:57 | #10

you have a good point if some thing cannot be proved true then it prabably is a lie, but consider this can you prove scientifically (that’s what I see you are implying) that you did something, example let’s say that you rode a bike yesterday, can you prove that scientifically? (remember science can only study things that are observable, measureable, and repeatable)

  11. James NON-JW
    November 9th, 2007 at 02:54 | #11

The feeling of emptiness you stated would have to be associated with the fact that you only ever knew organized man-made religion.
Consider the fact that despite your beliefs and ideology regarding a God, creation, a Messiah, etc, what is written in the Bible has never actually been established as factual. Sure, we can point to certain aspects & snippets of info & archeological developments that reaffirms our beliefs; however that doesn’t actually prove anything. Be realistic; think about the bigger picture, not just the concept of reality that has been provided to you since birth or whenever you adopted your beliefs.
Consider that there has been many evolutions of Christianity since its inception, even new ones to this day, however every one of them will manipulate and/or perceive that a given fact or new development from a secular standpoint justifies their belief/doctrinal structure, yet these beliefs could all be different from each others.

Yes, it is easy to judge each other with the firm conviction that our faith/beliefs are the only way, however if none of them can be proven factually, just what do you have?

in Christ the only thing I suffer for is believing in him and thats ok, Death in Christ means Life. Their is an enemy though, he doesn’t want any one to see the truth, so he opresses any one who does not know Christ, to keep them away from Christ.

To no name, if there is a God then why is there a feeling of emptiness (not emptyness) why so much suffering why so much death? Food for thought you no name

here’s a good question for you if there is no God then why is there a feeling of emptyness, why does man kind search so hard to fill this need, you know something is missing, if no God then what?

Some thoughts for the happy camper ever smiling the Lord loves me Christians:

Folks, most of you will not accept with what I put forward in this argument, it contains a similar dialogue I happened to recently have with a representative of my former religion which used to be the Jehovah’s Witnesses.
I saw some of the well dressed faithful doing the rounds in the road I live and invited them in.
Always willing to accept tea and biscuits, I made these good folk feel comfortable. We had a brief discussion on the sport of the day, us South Africans getting the better of the Australians and New Zealanders in the Super 14 Rugby.
It was not long before the leading representative took it upon himself to cut to the chase and tell me the good news, which for those of you who don’t know, involves 99% of mankind being wiped out by our loving father and son consortium.
He lead me to Matt 24 where the description of the world’s end is quite clear: floods, famine, disease, war etc.
I complained to him that in Matt 24 the scriptures were clearly talking about the folk then living, and he disagreed saying I should read then whole of the Bible including Revelation. To cut a long story short the clever JW was soon very happy to put a maximum amount of distance between them and I. All I was doing was asking him about the myriads of contradictions in the good book. I had not even started on my favourite subjects of the fabled creation and the great flood.
It came as a shock to him as it will to most of you out there, that the Atheist knows more about the scriptures than do most Christians. This is because most of us (who were Christian, take note) have taken the time to read the scriptures and understand them, and have come to our conclusions which generally speaking are as follows:
Biblegod is a bastard in the Old Testament but a hero in the New.
The convergence of both these pieces of writings is unlikely, as is confirmed by the Jews who will have nothing to do with the NT. I mean hell, lets get realistic, Biblegod brought lightning down and fried the unbelievers, even the good old mule keeper named Uzzah who put his hand out to prevent the Ark from falling was unbelievably murdered by our nice guy God.

Jesus and the New Testament comes along and we have a very good man who according to the good book had thousands of followers, he did a heck of a lot of good things, healing the sick, feeding hoards, turning water into wine and even raising the dead.
One would think this amazing fellow would be famous, we would imagine there would be rock paintings, perhaps sculptures of this incredible man.
But when one looks at reliable historical records this is not so.
Sorry folks, there is nothing other than the pathetic record by ancient historian whose name was Josephius whose extensive writings include the great Jesus in less than three paragraphs. Even these few words are deemed by scholars to have been forged by the clergy.
If the senile old men that wrote the scriptures, chose to have man created by Biblegod who waved his magic wand and turned the nearest tadpole into a man we would have swallowed it, why? Because it was written over 6000 years ago, while the art of writing was in its infancy.
In my opinion religion is a means of gaining revenue by the greedy from the mindless.
The notion of selling someone an idea that they will continue after their physical bodies have run out of gas has to be an evil absurdity in its purest form.

    Cheers,
    Markus

that sounds like a promising possibility but im not saying its totally correct.the thing that caught my eye was once a person leaves the witnesses whether baptised or not your belief system is almost nonexsistent. i would say this especially relates to people that are born and raised a JW.the problem with this NWO idea is that JWs shun or shall i say hate the goernment. How can u hate the government if the government is part of the NWO it is impossible in my eyes for someone trying to fulfill the NEW world order yet be against the government.i will comment more later

The Watchtower was secretly started and is supported
by the proponents for the new world order. As are current governments. This is a world wide plan to change the hearts and minds of people to a uniform worldwide belief system in the near future. The purpose of the watchtower doctrines is to destroy religious beliefs in people. (particularly christianity) by exposing the folly of christendom and reasons why traditional christian doctrine is absurd.Once a person becomes a JW he/she no longer believes in the doctrines of christendom. Once that person leaves the JWs they have no belief system and have no desire to join any because they now know that religions are illogical.(which is the goal of the Powers behind the JWs,namely that everyone who joins be made to get disillusioned with it and leave. Most people don’t stay in it their whole life. Only the mentally ill stay with the org.) In the same way the islamic republic of Iran was created to eventualy make people lose faith in Islam. It’s all part of the plan and it won’t be long now.

The Watchtower Society pressures EVERYBODY in Jehovah’s Witnesses to preach door-to-door.

EVERYBODY includes people who say they are repentant for sins of all sorts, which also means

wanted pedophiles, murderers, stalkers and the like…

Maybe if this organization had more sensible teachings and was willing to integrate critical ideas for the purpose of improving their own paradigm, they would not be losing so many members. And they wouldn’t need to waste so much money fighting legal battles because there wouldn’t be any.

Good comment, its information we all encountered during our due diligence in studying this religion’s true history.
Good old Buck-teeth and other zealous ignorant JW’s will merely dismiss all that was said and simply misquote scriptures, insult you and/or completely change the subject. This of course will all be accomplished with lunatic reasoning & what will appear to be a written code in need of deciphering. The code will simply be horrendous spelling & grammar all learnt at the KH.

Take care, perhaps Buck-teeth you would like to finally address your faith’s falsehoods? Don’t worry you’re not alone, we all at one time or another hard as it was, dealt with this too.

I wonder how many of the elders are looking on these sites to see how many of their own congregations are posting on them. They have the duty to keep the congregation “clean”, and this could include looking on these sites for posts that could come from their own. What I hope is that they will have to read so many of them that their eyes will be opened, and they will all turn apostate themselves. And if the hounders all turn apostate, the hounder-hounders will have to take their positions. And if they start looking for apostates, they themselves will be next. And so on up the line. Good for any who do turn apostate.

As a matter of fact, I have read many magazines. I have even been to quite a few meetings. I have noticed blatant contradictions from one article to the next, from one meeting to the next, and from one teaching to the next. One of the most blatant is when they tell people to rest, and when they report about a sport or hobby in the Asleep magazine. Then along comes the Service Meeting, and all the time spent on that sport or hobby is now counted as stolen from the ministry, and they hound you to sacrifice it to Jehovah. That is a blatant contradiction.

Another blatant contradiction is when they say that the assemblies are a taste of the new order. Then when I get there, the opposite sex wants absolutely nothing to do with me (not because of being disfellowshipped, since the MEN still come to me). And when I point out that they called this a taste of the new order, they contradict the statement directly. This is the kind of crap I have actually experienced–one teaching or article that blatantly clashes with others. And I am sure that there are many others that would fill a whole exabyte to describe them all (an exabyte is a billion gigabytes–a LOT of space). Suffice it to say that I have been through it, and I have seen many blatant contradictions from within their own teachings. And I have seen more bulls&^# on the official site, too.

    He is crazy.

He is on meds, well sometime’s by the look of it.

I don’t want to pick a fight with anyone, but WOW. There is some serious bantering going on here.

It is very interesting reading everyone’s opinion on things.

I don’t know why the JW”s are coming here and trying to make nice, then start throwing accuations around and such.

As stated before. I am happy I did’t get baptized because I don’t need anyone telling me what to think or say or do for that matter. Much like most people on this website.

We all found a way out, and thank goodness for that.
Well at least some of did, I am agree with James, fri and Tony and Markus. THINK FOR YOUR SELVES.

    Colette

And for this crazy person who want to Kill everone. Stay medicated. Take care of yourself. No one want’s to be a part of your craziness.

22 going on four, by the looks of it.

Hey, bebe, why don’t you tell your psychiatrist that your planning on killing JW elders and the like at your next appointment?

I’m all for destroying the Watchtower Society, but killing people is only going to get you a needle in your arm and give Witnesses the world over ammo to cry and whine about how persecuted they are….

Go pop and extra Halperidol and make a call to your case manager–you need help, not revenge. Matbe you need a time out in a locked ward where you’ll be safe–and so will society???

What kind of moron are you that you’d say this–or even think it???

“Vengeance is mine, saith the LORD…”

The only thing you’d prove if you actually carried out this stupid little plan of yours is that you lack any sense of humility and common decency–and you’d send *yourself* to Hell in the process.

Grow up. Only small children and crazy people make threats like these. Sheesh.

That’s right, Fred–you tell ‘em. But your direction is wrong. We’re looking North, not South. I think the smoke has confused you, poor little deluded guy…

Those old devilish deceitful liars, who referr to themselves as the Watch Tower, will die and rott in the hell, that the scriptures “DO” tell us about!
…and for their part in the rewriting of the bible and Christ’s church, just as those before them: Muhammod, Joseph Smith, Martin Luther, Parham, and ofcourse, Russell and others. They will “ALL rott!”
Christ’s avenges, and comes quickly, but NOT in 1914!

Okay there Sparky, knock yourself out. Perhaps it’s time for your medication?
I understand your hate, it’s just not going to help any cause or argument if you’re acting insane.
