History’s littered with doom-watchers who wake up every morning and predict the end of the world.
Cults, telly evangelists, random nutjobs, jehovha’s witnesses, they all make death their life’s work.
The head of The Moonies comes out round about once a decade and announces the date when we’ll all go phut.
The Jehovah’s Witnesses told us we were doomed in . . . wait for it . . . 1874, 1878, 1881, 1910, 1914, 1918, 1925 and 1975.
After their ninth stab — 1984 — passed by without calamity, they decided to stick to doing the Lottery.
Everyone from U2 to REM’s written songs about it. Bruce Willis starred in one of a shelfload of movies about it. They made a Dr Who episode about it. The Bible was just the first of a mountain of books using it as a plot line.
It’s a global obsession.
The first recorded end-of-the-world prediction I can find was in 633BC. Then there was one in 398BC. Then 167BC.
Then, come the AD years, we had 53, 93, 100, 156, 195, 210 . . . and you get the drift. There’s barely a year in history when some gonk HASN’T given it the Private Fraser patter.
There was mass halfwittery in 1982, when assorted seers told us the planets would align, blocked out the sun and do us in.
Then came January 1, 2000. That was meant to be our Nightmare Ne’erday, the date when all the computers stopped, planes fell from the skies and nukes went off by themselves.
When that didn’t happen, they started arguing the Millennium started in 2001. And when the Twin Towers were bombed, they were all chuffed with themselves.
All those connotations about what 9/11 signified. And not one person over here mentioned that on our calendar, it means November 9.
Fanatics
So what next? Oh yeah, June 6, 2006 — 6/6/6, see?
But no, we didn’t spontaneously combust that day either.
Or on August 22 the same year, the next day religious fanatics talked up as Armageddon time.
Still, nils desperandum, as they say in Sweden.
The good news is that there are already hundreds of apocalyptic predictions stacked up for every year to come from here to . . . well, Doomsday. There’s one scheduled in for Dec 21, 2012, when a giant comet’s meant to crash into Earth and kill all of us.
Another for the summer of 2014, which might affect traffic heading for the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.
And I’m particularly bummed about a mob calling itself The Church of Blair, who claim space monkeys will invade and beat us all to death on September 14, 2047.
Seeing as it’ll put something of a crimp in my 85th birthday celebrations.

I am getting real sick of this shit, what about you guys????

No one talks directly with God and has his phone number. Yet - I believe that humanity as a whole is good. Why? Because if you think about all of the capabilities we as humans have to destroy ourselves - and yet we are still here. Why is that? Because there are enough GOOD people to keep things in balance. Even if you hate president George W. Bush, you can’t ignore the fact that without him and his leadership, terrorists and evil ones are now cowering in the mountains and in holes in the ground. When I’m honest with my self I believe there is a God and a Satan - because it right to me.

Don’t you think if Satan ruled EVERY nation that we would constantly be dropping Nukes and that terrorists would overrun everything? Rapes and murder would happen to all of us all of the time? Why would the Devil even allow us to enjoy God’s creation? Why would the devil allow us to curse him?

I DENY the premise that the world is getting worse and worse every day. I CAN’T believe that we are destroying ourselves as a whole. God plays a role on this earth just as much as the devil does. After 25 years of hearing the Witnesses repeat day after day to look at the Media and see for yourself how bad things are - and now I know they were wrong. Everyone knows the media is biased - EVERYONE. My faith in my beliefs leads me down a path that is Truly Narrow - I’m a minority of a minority of a minority and I’ve accepted that. I don’t have the personal phone number to God, so I have to use my own god-given brain and my own discernment and keep in Faith that he is just and loving.
