The divine one: Prince adds a ‘Rainbow’ of religion to his eclectic musical pot

What to expect when the artist formerly known as The Artist Formerly Known as Princetakes the stage at the Paramount Monday?

Don’t ask us. Even the Purple One can’t seem to make up his mind.

As Prince, 43, nears the end of a 29-date tour, he continues to keep fans guessing. (So what else is new?) At a sold-out show in Lakeland, Fla., three weeks ago, Prince started things off by announcing, “If you came to get your Purple Rain on, you have come to the wrong place. This is not 1984.” He later played the hit song in its entirety. But he’s shunned fans in other cities who have shouted requests for the song (and other 1980s classics).

Billed as “a stripped-down show that allows the music to speak for itself,” “One Nite Alone with Prince” abandons the backup dancers and pyrotechnics and focuses instead on Prince’s latest album, the deeply religious “The Rainbow Children.” Reports from other tour stops include sprinklings of classic hits such as “Raspberry Beret” and “When You Were Mine”; at least one city was treated to a medley of hits including “Diamonds and Pearls,” “Nothing Compares 2 U” and “How Come U Don’t Call Me,” a song covered by rising star Alicia Keys in her debut album.

Known for his variety of sounds — rock, funk, soul, blues — Prince, a recently converted Jehovah’s Witness, delves into his spirituality in the jazz-oriented “The Rainbow Children.” His 23rd album is loaded with religious imagery and has been called by critics everything from “challenging” to “rewarding” to “weird.” (Fans count at least 50 Prince songs the artist can no longer perform as a Jehovah’s Witness due to their explicit content, including hits such as “Little Red Corvette” and “Cream.”)

But don’t expect to hear any songs from the new album on the radio. Prince hasn’t charted a hit in eight years (his last was 1994’s “The Most Beautiful Girl in the World”). Not to say that his new stuff isn’t good (on the contrary, some critics laud “The Rainbow Children” as his best work in years), but Prince is in control now, and he just doesn’t seem interested in doing things the usual way.

After his well-publicized battles with record label Warner Bros. and a brief stint with Arista Records in the ’90s, Prince began his own online society, The New Power Generation Music Club (www.npgmusicclub.com), last year. As members of the NPG clan, fans pay $100 annually plus a monthly fee to download Prince’s music before anyone else, buy tickets to shows (that’ll be another $100, thank you) and get invites to pre-show sound checks. No more music videos, singles or advertising — seemingly, now, Prince is all about the music.

Expect the same for his show. “Real music by real musicians,” Prince has said of the tour, which includes appearances by veteran saxophonist Maceo Parker and drummer John Blackwell. There will be no choreography or lip syncing, and — if previous shows are any indicator — good luck searching for any method to a maddening mix of covers, jams, solos and new tunes.

I thought these people were pathetic sheep when I was growing up within the church, and even more now at 40. Every time they open their mouth, they prove it time and time again! I haven’t been on this site in months probably, and it’s still business as usual. Ex-JW’s sharing the stories the WTS wishes would have stayed in the closet (Unfortunately for them the internet brings the global community together and secrets about the JW’s internal dealings don’t stay a secret forever!), and of course the nosey, busy-body witnesses who can’t help but surf the web in search of “apostate” sites to try and puff their chests at. Some things in life go hand in hand: bread & butter, peanut butter & jelly, Jehovahs Witnesses & mental illness. Bottom line. Anyhoo…Nice to see Markus & James are still giving a few of these paranoid little buggers a run for their money. I look forward to their comments when I happen upon this forum. Keep up the good work gentleman. Oh, and one last thing…What was Prince thinking?

Being a Jehovahs Witness is something to be proud of, not to take advantage of it

Well if the above comment was generated by someone older than 14 years of age, your faith is in trouble. How you folks can come into forums of this nature posting uneducated & illiterate messages, yet think anyone will take you seriously is beyond me.

If you were to see the bigger picture rather than the small one created by the Watchtower, you would see that your religion suffers from the following which CLEARLY indicates a FALSE religion. These aspects are:

1. NOT ONE PROPHECY OF THE WATCHTOWER HAS EVER COME TRUE. That should be an automatic red light. After all, if you do not have a single prediction (and there have been many) come true, what else matters? What does the book of Deuteronomy say regarding false prophecies?
2. The faith’s structure, processes, procedures & policies are akin to any cult. Study the psychological identifiers of a cult, notice the similarities.
3. The doctrines have been built on extremely shaky foundations, what happens to buildings built on quicksand?
4. This faith constantly changes its doctrines, and attempts to claim its new light from God on the subject. Many people have been ill-affected by these changes, yet the Watchtower remains unaccountable. Other than the obvious, how is it that this faith can be so wrong continually, hurt people and yet pronounce they are God’s chosen channel? Would Christ have done the same?

Nice try Ed, there have been many prophecies of the Watchtower, ALL of which have failed, quite miserably might I add.
Just what do you have in this faith when all of their doctrines, “truths” & prophecies are incorrect?
Time to face facts, YOU HAVE NOTHING MORE THAN A CULT!

“Prophecies of the Watchtower”,you proudly say.Have you actually read the Watchtower?,if so than you should know that the Watchtower simply writes what in the Bible. Is the Bible not Gods word?.If you say that the prophecies have failed, prophecies by God, than you are simply saying. in modern language, that God has failed.Who gave you athority to question The Most high?.Give me one prophecy that you label as incorrect.Remeber that due to the lack of understanding, people once thought that the earth itself was flat.Lets say you heard that the earth was round before it was scientifically proven, would’nt you have said that scientist themselves have failed and that they have nothing more than a cult?.

Have I even read the Watchtower? Perhaps I should start by asking that instead of showing up to these so-called apostate sites and after reading a few comments, decide to lecture everyone on your vast knowledge of the Bible. You should instead take some time to read our comments from days & months prior, so I won’t have to re-type or copy & paste the same stuff over and over again for every JW stating the same lame arguments.

Well, here it goes again.

I used to be a JW for approximately 16-18 years, so yeah I read the Watchtower.

On the subject of the Watchtower merely writing what’s in the Bible, my first question is why do you need the Watchtower? Read the Bible, besides you would be much better off.

Albeit no one has the right to question God’s authority, we DO have the right to question the Watchtower’s authority, do you not agree? Or should we blindly & ignorantly believe everything they say, without checking?

To attempt to mirror or see parallels with science and the Watchtower’s discernment is absolutely laughable at best. At least science doesn’t assume anything; they test and check every notion or hypothesis to determine its authenticity.

So, with this in mind, let’s discuss the Watchtower Society, I would be more than happy too.

As far as stating that I am indicating that God has failed on his prophecies, I didn’t say that and please DO NOT attempt to propose that the Watchtower is infallible or inspired of God. The questions/statements below prove otherwise.
Based on the Watchtower’s ideology/prophecies and the so-called ‘fact’ that its all from the Bible, please answer the following:

1. Where in the Bible does it say Jerusalem’s temple was destroyed in 607 B.C.E? How is it they came up with that date, yet not one historian, scholar or archeologist agrees with it?
2. Where in the Bible is 1914 stated as initially the end of the world and then later the start of the end? Did the Bible change its meaning during the time period?
3. By the way, how are you guys making out with the “generation that won’t pass away” starting in 1914? Any of these folks still alive?
4. Where does the Bible say, thou shall not smoke? I agree that smoking is bad for you, however so is obesity, yet no one is disfellowshipped for that.
5. Where does it say in the Bible that only JW’s will be saved?
6. Did you folks honestly think the Bible was written just for your religion? Did you think that Jesus & his apostles knew of your existence thousands of years before?
7. Where does the Bible condone practices of hypocrisy? Since the good book didn’t perhaps you can explain why the Watchtower was an NGO partner with the UN for years? Could you also explain why they own companies that manufacturer weapons?
8. Speaking of hypocrisy, are you comfortable with the quiet, irresponsible attitude and handling of the rampant pedophile problem within your faith?
9. Since when would the judgmental attitude of the Watchtower & the average JW be approved or have been practiced by Christ, wherein which they criticize all other faiths & dogmatically push their agenda?
10. If all prophecies of the Watchtower are truthful & from God himself, how do you explain the fact they have wrongfully given dates for the world on at least 5-6 occasions?
11. In one of your or someone else’s earlier comments it states that there weren’t any prophecies of the Watchtower. Are you new to this faith? Everyone knows their ill-fated prophecies, how about pre-1914? What about 1925 or 1975? Do your research and you will find that these are only some of their ridiculous prophecies.
12. Speaking of getting prophecies wrong, how about Rutherford building the palace (named Beth Sarim) to welcome back the Bible prophets, only to have the buildings quietly sold years later, because they blew it again.

There are a ton more questions; however these are for you to answer. To be truthful, I typed this out for others as much or more than for you, as just about every single JW never actually answers these types of questions. All ex-JW know full well that you can’t, what are sad are the emotional responses that usually follow our comments.
Please do yourself a favor and research this religion since its infancy, Russell’s use of the occult, spiritualism & pyramids for example. There is also Rutherford’s insanity & drunkenness, all the while running the show like a dictator. Every pillar of truth in this religion is nothing more than baloney.
Put down the kool-aid and start doing your homework, after all its your life and you don’t want to waste it on a faith or ideology that’s false do you?

Thanks and God Bless.

James,

I also get very tired of giving the same arguments to newcomers on this site. I now copy my comments into a scrapbook, and paste them back when required. Saves a heap of time.

Give us one prophecy of the bible that has failed

Posted on August 17, 2007 at 2:29 pm

Comment by Markus (Comment ID: 259684)

A prophecy that has not come about, do me a favour.

Better still give me one that has come about, please do not give me rampant crime and lawlessness, 10 years from now it shall be worse, this I can assure you and I am not a prophet.
Pray tell me only one prophesy in the Bible that has come about, and I shall shoot it down. King Caphius the king of Babylon depending on which version I, II, III, or IV was alive when Babylon was decimated, never to be inhabited again, a pretty good prophecy where you lot use to recruit more worker bees for your organization, this however does not lot so good maybe for Isaiah, for both you and I can book into a hotel on line in Babylon, which was to be decimated, and never again to be inhabited. Isiaiah was an Old Testament version of a wino or redneck, which is why the good book, perhaps is held in such high regard.
In this good book, we have more pornograprhy and violence that would ever have been allowed in a pre- 80’s movie or novel. It (the Bible) was written so long ago, it must be true.
I as an outspoken Atheist, probably can counter any argument you can conjure from the Bible, what I cannot do however, is explain our origions, our world is indeed beautiful, and at the same time cruel, an all knowing God could be accepted, but sorry, not Biblegod, if there is a God out there he has as much compassion for us as a great white shark eating it’s prey. Perhaps HE is observing us as we do observe our ant farm, when a few thousand ants decimate 6 million others he takes a few notes in his book and makes observations. This God will neither ressurect us nor expect us to praise him by playing a harp or by any other form. This has always been a ploy by thieves and liars taking advantage of a gullible people who think they are too intelligent to die.

Cheers,
Markus

I’m so glad that you are scripture literate, keep it up.You say that none of the Watchtower prophecies come true, let me assure you-they are not Watchtower prophecies but they are Biblical prophecies.Open the indicated scriptures as proof.Regarding the treth of the scriptures, please read 1 Timothy 3:1-7.After reading this scipture, observe the world on which we live in.Do you not see these things happening around you?,if you do than that means that that scripture is having its fufilment as we speak.More evidence is available on the fulfilment of scriptures, all you have to do is:
1.Ask God to help you.
2.Understand what the prophecy is fortelling than it would be easier for you to see its fulfilment. All the Watchtower is doing is that it is trying to make Bible reading more easier.I’m more than happy to answer any questions you might have on any of our publications, feel free to e-mail me at:lungienkomo@yahoo.com
Please read Revelation 1:3.
May God bless your Bible-reading efforts.

I had the same problem than i started thinking:What can i possibly lose. When judgement day comes, what will you tell God?-i’m sorry God i was too scared?.Scared of what exactly?.Are you scared of mere humans?.What can they possibly do to you. Please read Romans 8:35.Are you really going to let your fear for people take away your right of everlasting life. Please think about these things.E-MAIL ME IF YOU NEED TO CHAT WITH SOMEONE WHO KNOWS WHAT YOU’RE GOING TROUGH.

I also studied to be a JW for 18 yrs but did not commit cause something wasn’t right. My questions were never answered to my satisfaction. It will do you well to listen to James-non jw cause it will save you a lot of time. Read your Bible not theirs, do research on the group. They may mean well but they lead to somewhere you may not want to be. The Watchtower Society and the “faithful and descreet slave” are not God. You follow God’s rules not mans or theirs!
