Astrology and the WTS

Three articles in Awake! magazine (1994 July 8 ) derided astrology and star worship. What is missing in these articles is an admission of what the Watchtower Society (WTS) used to teach.

For 62 years, 1891 to 1953, the WTS taught that God resided on the star Alcyone in the Pleiades constellation and that from this star he governed the universe!

This belief was taught in 1891 in Volume 3 of Studies in the Scriptures p. 327 and was based on passages in the Bible.

The WTS also taught that the Great Pyramid of Egypt provided additional proof of God’s throne in the Pleiades! (The Golden Age 1924 September 10 pp. 793-794)

this distance to be from ninety to ninety six millions of miles, their latest calculation and conclusion being ninety-two millions. The Great Pyramid has also its own way of indicating that most correct standard of all weights and measures, based upon the size and weight of the earth, which it is also claimed to indicate.

Commenting upon the scientific testimony and the location of this majestic “Witness,” Rev. Joseph Seiss, D. D. suggests:

“There is a yet grander thought embodied in this wonderful structure. Of its five points there is one of special pre-eminence, in which all its sides and exterior lines terminate. It is the summit corner, which lifts its solemn index finger to the sun at midday, and by its distance from the base tells the mean distance to that sun from the earth. And if we go back to the date which the Pyramid gives itself, and look for what that finger pointed to at midnight, we find a far sublimer indication. Science has at last discovered that the sun is not a dead center, with planets wheeling about it, and itself stationary. It is now ascertained that the sun also is in motion, carrying with it its splendid retinue of comets, planets, its satellites and theirs, around some other and vastly mightier center. Astronomers are not yet fully agreed as to what or where that center is. Some, however, believe that they have found the direction of it to be the Pleiades, and particularly Alcyone, the central one of the renowned Pleiadic stars. To the distinguished German astronomer, Prof. J. H. Maedler, belongs the honor of having made this discovery. Alcyone, then, as far as science has been able to perceive, would seem to be the ‘midnight throne’ in which the whole system of gravitation has its central seat, and from which the Almighty governs his universe. And here is the wonderful corresponding fact, that at the date of the Great Pyramid’s building, at midnight of the autumnal equinox, and hence the true beginning of the year* as still preserved in the traditions of many nations, the Pleiades were distributed

The International Bible Students Souvenir Convention Report of 1914 says:

The Pleiades, the center of the universe, are located in Taurus, and as though to emphasize the foundation, the original meaning of Alcyone, one of the chief stars of the Pleiades, is “foundation”. How significant that the whole universe should throughout the ages swing about that constellation and that star which alone picture so clearly the Ransom! The bullock offered on the brazen altar in the court was indeed the foundation: it represented the sacrifice of the Lord. The bullock in the sky represented the very same thing. (pp. 252-253)

The book Reconciliation says:

But the greatness in size of other stars or planets is small when compared to the Pleiades in importance, because the Pleiades is the place of the eternal throne of God. (p. 14)

From: Reconciliation (1928) p. 14 (Retyped)

14 Reconciliation
man sees that the earth occupies a place of great importance in God’s plan and purposes and that in his due time every creature in heaven and in earth will be brought into one grand harmonious whole or unity. To this effect the inspired witness of Jehovah wrote:
“Having made known unto us the mystery of his will, according to his good pleasure which he hath purposed in himself: that in the dispensation of the fulness of times he might gather together in one all things in Christ, both which are in heaven, and which are on earth; even in him.”—Eph. 1: 9, 10.

The constellation of the seven stars forming the Pleiades, appears to be the crowning center around which the known systems of the planets revolve even as our sun’s planets obey the sun and travel in their respective orbits. It has been suggested, and with much weight, that one of the stars of that group is the dwelling-place of Jehovah and the place of the highest heavens; that it is the place to which the inspired writer referred when he said: “Hear thou from thy dwellingplace, even from heaven” (2 Chron. 6:21); and that it is the place to which Job referred when under inspiration he wrote: “Canst thou bind the sweet influences of Pleiades, or loose the bands of Orion?”—Job 38: 31.

The constellation of the Pleiades is a small one compared with others which scientific instruments disclose to the wondering eyes of man. But the greatness in size of other stars or planets is small when compared with the Pleiades in importance, because the Pleiades is the place of the eternal throne of God. For a like reason the various groups of stars, greater in size than the planet earth, must in the eyes of

In 1953 the doctrine about Alcyone and the Pleiades was discarded:

Some attribute striking qualities to these constellations or star groups and on the basis of such they then offer private interpretations of Job 38:31, 32 that amaze their hearers… when viewed scripturally they are completely without foundation.
(The Watchtower 1953 November 15 p. 703)

The Bible verses quoted in this 1953 article which were used by “Some” to “amaze their hearers” were in fact the verses used by the WTS to prove that God resided on the Star Alcyone! (The Watchtower 1915 June 15 p. 185; The Golden Age 1928 May 16 p. 540)

A different link of WTS doctrine with astrology appeared in The Watch Tower of 1903. There astrology and planetary positions were said to support the WTS’s predictions of “the long promised era” to start by 1914. (Watchtower Reprints 1903 May 1 p. 3184)

From: Zion’s Watch Tower 1903 May 1 p. 3184 (Retyped)

AN ASTROLOGER’S OUTLOOK
We seriously question all the claims of astrology; yet the following—from whatever source the suggestions come, even though of the adversary himself—seem remarkably true to our expectations based upon the Word of the Lord. For this reason alone we present them here,—as follows:—

“Saturn is the representative of the great motive power that has dominated the mind of man up to the present time. The great organizations of Capital, attracting now so much attention, are in reality the last great struggle of this Saturn-god to save his throne. But his efforts will be futile, yet far from useless, for he is blindly doing service for a still greater God in the same way as the other planets have contributed blindly to Saturn’s glory.

“Jupiter, representing law, religion and morality, has been perforce subservient to Saturn’s greater and more potent force. It explains why the church, the law, the charitable and educational institutions have contributed to increasing the power and prestige of the worldly and material Saturn, whose selfish monopolizing material nature must be disposed of and made tributary to a higher, nobler force that will carry out the work of human evolution.

“Jupiter must also transfer his allegiance from the grasping Saturn to the newly discovered factor that stands for universal brotherhood; namely, Uranus. When Uranus and Jupiter meet in the humane sign of Aquarius in 1914, the long-promised era will have made a fair start in the work of setting man free to work out his own salvation, and will insure the ultimate realization of dreams and ideals of all poets and sages in history.

“Uranus is preparing the way for Neptune, who symbolizes love in its very highest form—the fulfilling of the law. By this, we see that Socialism, or whatever the new order may be called, will not and can not be the rule of the common or ignorant masses but the leadership of the very highest developed members of the human family.

“In 1903 Jupiter will be in the Sign of Pisces—sign of the feet, or understanding, and the synthesis of the new religion is Love;—Love that words cannot define. We are nearing a condition where “masters” will be unknown—where humanity will instinctively conform to the injunction, ‘Call no man master, neither be ye called master.’

“Note—Uranus: Great commotions are expected when it shall take its ascendancy over Saturn.”

The constellations of the Zodiac are presently considered by the WTS as being of Pagan origin. (Insight on the Scriptures Volume 2 1988 p. 1240) The same were regarded in 1914 as of Divine origin with each of the 12 Zodiacal signs having numerous correspondencies with the Bible.

To my knowledge the WTS has not directly admitted their error about God’s throne on the Star Alcyone. Their latest history book JWs Proclaimers of God’s Kingdom (1993) which they claim is “objective” and “candid” is silent on the subject.

Markus there are several sources that speak of Jesus as a being that has lived on this earth an all are from approx. the same period in time. Besides that there are several documentaries available that have researched the possibility of a physical Jesus. Almost all come to the conclusion that it is very possible that Jesus has lived truely.
OK there are doubts on whether the know sources are all exactly true (not altered in time by biblical believers: hope you understand what I’m mean here) but there are sources found that date (almost) back to the aera the author lived.
Do a Google and you’ll find other sources of Jesus possible true excistence.

I’m not a JW nor a true christian just someone who is open-minded.

All we need to know is that Jesus died for our sins, but if you need to be intellectual use this: JW’s believe and teach that Jesus is not God, just look at John 1:1 in their bible, the end of the verse according to them “…the Word was a god” says that the Word (Jesus, (John 1:14), is a god other than the one true God. Let’s look at that for a moment, if that is true then according to JW’s own bible they are breaking the first commandment (Exodus 20:3).

But if that is not clear enough, turn to Isaiah 44:6 “This is what Jehovah has said…’I am the first and I am the last, and besides me there is no God’. Now let’s reference that to Revelation 1:17,18 17 And when I saw him, I fell as dead at his feet. And he laid his right hand upon me and said: “Do not be fearful. I am the first and the last, 18 and the living one; and I became dead, but, look! I am living forever and ever, and I have the keys of death and Ha’des.

Clearly Isaiah was talking about God (YHWH, Jehovah) and Revelation is talking about Jesus, in both examples there can only and is only one (1) first and last.

Jesus is God!

dougp, if salvation s by faith alone, what about the scripture ‘faith without works is dead’?

I hope you don’t mind me answering this:

Salvation is open to all humanity because of Christ’s sacrifice. The only thing that excludes a person from this amazing news is a deliberate choice not to accept salvation. In other words a person saying “I rather go to hell” or the like may have his/her wish respected.

Now, faith without works is indeed dead. But works are a natural consequence of faith. Works are not some obligation we have to meet for our salvation, but they are a priviledge given to us by the grace of faith. Faith naturally moves us to works, each to our own.

Just like regular excercise leads to lower cholesterol levels, a healthy faith leads us to actions.

Brothers, the truth is inside of you as is the kingdom. If we love our neighbor as our self then we are part of the true church. We need not be tied down to this denomination or that, remember the poor, take care of widows and orphans, and most importantly LOVE.

Actually, loving one’s neighbor doesn’t make anyone a part of the true church. It comes simply by a trusting faith in Jesus Christ our Savior, and accepting Him as God of our lives. A lot of people love and are not saved, salvation is not by works but by faith alone in Jesus Christ

THESE ARTICLES ABOUT HOW MANY TIMES THE GREAT W.T.B.T.S. HAS SHIFTED GEARS, ARE VERY GOOD TO SHOW THAT IT HAS BEEN A CULT FROM BEGINNING TO END. IT IS HARD TO BELIEVE THAT SMART PEOPLE GET HOOKED ON THEIR WAY OF LOOKING AT EVERYTHING. I CONSIDER MY SELF TO BE KNOWLEDGEABLE ON MANY THINGS BUT I WAS INVOLVED WITH THIS CULT FOR 47-YEARS AND DID NOT EVEN QUESTION THEM. THANK GOD I FINALLY CAME TO MY SENSES.

Wow! 47 years. You have me beat by about 20 years!

Yes, like you, I am thankful as is my Mother and her sister. We were all raised in this Orwell style “truth” and incredibly one day I woke up.

The greatest challenge now is having to THINK. The feeling that perhaps I don’t konw the absolute “truth” and perhaps nobody knows is one that at first frightening. But, I have found that no matter what we believe, what we wish for or how bad we want things to be, true reality is, and has ever been, the same. The greatest gift to me being out and on my own is facing reality and embracing it for what it is. It takes courage, humility and a surrendering to God (or what ever created us) to show you the real truth no matter what it is!
“…keep surching, keep knocking…”
“…and the truth will set you free.”

I would disagree with your conclusion that JWs are a cult. What about their strong commitment to worldly brotherly love, very far away from racism, abuses, their clean conduct as to every walk of life, etc? They are a truly amazing united brotherhood. They don’t believe in nations and borders and wars and human controls. Do you? A true God who is NIL imperfection will not make humans fight or even hate one another. Definitely NOT will he create them that way. Neither will he let them die. Do you believe in your heart that you wish people did not die? Maybe you’d have had such an unfortunate occasion of someone’s death. Did you feel for the dead person that he/she was alive forever? I’m sorry to say if you didn’t feel this way then you’re not following the true god. You may very well be knowing that the Bible says that the true God is love, justice, kind feeling at heart, in various chapters. Remember, the Genesis chapter where Jehovah felt hurt at his heart when he saw badness in all the corners of the earth. Satan is very clever and cunning. And not only that he is a master of trickery and foolery too. He fools and tricks people into not following the true religion. I have understood that fully well. So my hope for salvation is only Jehovah and his true religion. Not just this, I am on Jehovah’s side becaus I am on the side of the truth.

Your right Maskindo, “he is a master of trickery and foolery”!

Outward appearences can be quite deceiving when it comes to the WT. Especially to new ones.

All these things that you mention, “their strong commitment to worldly brotherly love, very far away from racism, abuses, their clean conduct as to every walk of life, etc? They are a truly amazing united brotherhood.” Are used as psychological tools to keep people in line. Once a person dares to speak up that he/she disagrees with the WT “Mama” on some point or another, they are threatened with being isolated from this “united brotherhood” as you call it. For some individuals this is everyone they know!! Including friends and family.

You say they don’t believe in “nations and borders and wars and human controls.” I say you are wrong! They practice all this within their own organization.

The purpose , I believe, of this organization is to deviate the true Church of Christ, if possible. To deceive many into thinking that they have to belong to a “true religion” here on earth, in order to be saved.

“For false messiahs and false prophets will rise up and perform miraculous signs and wonders so as to deceive, if possible, even God’s chosen ones.” - Mark 13:22

Truth be told, Jehovah is not a name that was in the bible any where. It’s actually quite ironic that you say you are on the side of truth. Jehovah is name that was made up in the late 40’s or so because YHWH is the true name of God, Jehovah is a translated/substitued name because when translating from Hebrew to english there are no excact letter or vowel sounds so next closest one is used and poof there you have a not true name for God. Also, God was on the side of many battles in the old testiment. That said , is the whole bible wrong? and God is not a true God? Actually dying is one of the many reasons God made us. So ask your self, will I ever die? yes because that was God’s plan. If HE intented for us to live forever like Him , that would be sad and pointless.

Thank God for Clairity in your life….We too were part of this Belief…..my husband; for 46 years and myself for; 26 years. Yes, JW’s have a clever way of teaching even Smart individuals…it is done on a decieving plan…by not letting their members read any other religious material except theirs..or researching the Internet on”THEIR faith”…saying it is all propaganda used by Satan as a snare to put DOUBT in our mind.. We thank JESUS, everyday…for the blessing of his Love for us…we too were released from Bondage as were the Israelites…God is Good All the Time!

Hey Sandra + Scott,

Jep, I could not agree with you more, the JW have cottoned onto a belief based on Christianity, but has it’s own preterist belief (the belief of Jesus returning any day now and coming to redeem the world). This redemption includes the ending of all suffering, death, and everything you and I are afraid of.
I kind of like this idea, and I’m sure you do too.
When Jesus takes over we are going to live in paradise,
Jesus will appoint angels to take over the running of power stations, the dock yard workers, and the sewage control; we will never have to work again, at least when do we will go to work knowing how much we will enjoy it. Praise be to Jesus! Funny how you now say the JW are talking crap, for do you not believe what they do?
You have scriptures which will prove your point and believe me they have their own which will prove theirs.
The debate will go round and round.
Seeing as the fact that there is Zero reliable evidence of Jesus ever existing despite the fact he raised Lazarus who was clearly dead at the time. Imagine you at a crime scene where the bank robber was shot dead,
eleven 357’s thru his brain and along comes a bearded cloaked man who sayeth ‘you are not dead good man
you are alive’, and the man gets up and walks into jail.
In one thousand years you could probably read all about it from a thousand sources. Not Jesus, sorry the good fellow could only muster up one dubious historian,
Joesuphus was his name, do on do a google search on it, and discover for yourself how famous Jesus was outside the New Testament.
Just THINK about how Jesus has diverted such diseases as AIDS and Maleria. How good it is he diverted YOU from such a catastrophe and allowed so many other innocents into it.
What a loving God, wow I think I should dedicate my life to him right now.

Cheers,
Markus
